American Citizenship Readiness Class

Students will practice answering the oral questions of the N-400 application form to gain confidence in their interview skills. The classes will cover essential topics on the one hundred (100) U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services civics study questions.

Classroom topics include an overview of U.S. history, geography, civics, and government. In addition, students will practice pronunciation, reading aloud, writing, dictation, and orally answering the civics questions.

The textbook for the class is provided free of charge to students. Classroom activities include interactive games and activities as well as traditional study.
Students are referred to area resources for help answering specific questions about their individual situations and filling out the N-400 application.

Criteria for the “N-400 test” – US Citizenship

What is a N-400 test? It is the citizenship test that a person must take during their naturalization interview when applying for U.S. citizenship using Form N-400, which is
the application for naturalization; it includes both an English language test and a civics test that assesses the applicant’s knowledge of U.S. history and government.

Information about the class:

• Classes are FREE
• Class meets on Tuesday and Thursday nights, 6-8 PM
• Classes will be held at 128 Union Street, 3rd Floor, New Bedford, MA 02740
• Standard Fee to file your N-400 application is $760.

For you to qualify for DLA’s financial help, you must:

• Not be absent from class more than 4 times.
• Proof of less than $45,000/yr annual income.

Additional Information

In addition, USCIS allows applicants to request a reduced fee for Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. They recognize that some applicants cannot afford to
pay the full filing fee ($710-760) but can pay a reduced fee ($380). They will approve a reduced fee request only if you clearly show that your documented annual household income is less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. They will carefully consider the merits of each reduced fee request before they decide on your request.

A reduced fee is not the same as a fee waiver. Please see their Form I-912, Request for Fee Waiver page for information about fee waivers. Do not file both a request for a reduced fee and a request for a fee waiver.

If you are requesting a reduced fee or filing a fee waiver, you cannot file Form N-400 online. You must file a paper Form N-400 if you are requesting a reduced fee or filing a fee waiver.

You must prove:
• You, or your spouse is, or the head of household living in your household is currently receiving a means-tested benefit.
• Your household income is at or below 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
• You have a financial hardship.
