The overall objective of this 30-week course in Conversational Portuguese for Adult Beginners is for the learner to acquire a communicative competence that will allow them not only to form grammatically correct sentences, but also to interact with other speakers, using appropriate speech acts for everyday communicative situations. This approach will help learners gain confidence in speaking Portuguese.We will be using Português em Foco 1, both the student book and the workbook, following their scope and sequence. We will start with the introductory unit 0 and work our way to unit 9, offering a thorough and gradual learning curve. The instructor will supplement with other materials whenever necessary.
Due to the course’s conversational nature, there will be more emphasis on speaking, but all other language domains will be practiced in each lesson. The focus on communicative competence ensures that learners will not only understand grammar but also be able to use the target language in real-life situations.
